Antipsychotic-induced movement disorders: A multidisciplinary approach to recognition, screening, and management

Description

This activity will cover four main antipsychotic-induced movement disorders – dystonia, parkinsonism, akathisia, and tardive dyskinesia – with a focus on symptom recognition, screening tools, and management. We will also provide education about misuse of medications for antipsychotic-induced movement disorders, such as the use of anticholinergics (benztropine) for akathisia and tardive dyskinesia. Since psychiatric practice currently relies heavily on telemedicine as the primary mode of patient interaction, our program will give specific strategies for providers to use in patient assessment for these disorders when using videoconferencing.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to:

1: Outline an understanding of antipsychotic induced movement disorders (AIMD)

2: Recognize presentation of AIMD and appropriately screen

3: Discuss treatment strategies

4: Identify resources to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals

5: Discuss approaches to educate patients, patients’ advocates, colleagues

Speakers:

Steven Szabo, MD, PhD is a board-certified psychiatrist, trained neuroscientist and practicing translational psychopharmacologist who conducts industry and government funded clinical research trials as a clinical researcher at PPD, Inc.

Andrew Muzyk, PharmD, MHPE is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Medical Education at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC and an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Buies Creek, NC. Dr. Muzyk also holds a Clinical Associate appointment in the Duke University School of Nursing.
